Are you stuck trying to decide what to wear to your newborn session? I get it, styling can feel overwhelming when you’re trying to coordinate outfits for the whole family. Have no fear – I’m sharing my best styling advice as a newborn photographer who has photographed hundreds of sweet little ones with their families!

What should baby wear?

First, lets start with your baby…You don’t have to bring a thing for your sweet babe! I have a wide variety of wraps, headbands, bows, hats and props that your little one can wear. However, feel free to bring special handmade items or blankets that you’d like to include in your session. These precious keepsakes make your baby’s newborn pictures that much sweeter.

How to Coordinate Your Family’s Outfits for Your Newborn Session

Capturing the innocence and beauty of your newborn is a precious experience, and choosing the perfect wardrobe can enhance the overall aesthetic of your newborn photography session. Here are my top 5 tips to help you select the ideal outfits for your little one and yourself. By following these guidelines, you can ensure that your baby takes center stage, creating timeless and heartwarming memories.

  1. Create a Palette: To achieve a visually pleasing and harmonious look, it’s best to select a palette of 3-4 colors that will form the foundation of your wardrobe. Consider choosing colors from the same family or tones, such as pastels, blue tones, or neutrals. By sticking to a coordinated color scheme, you will create a cohesive and polished appearance in your photographs.

2. Embrace Solid Colors: While patterns can be captivating, they can also distract attention away from your newborn. To ensure that your little one remains the star of the show, it’s advisable to stick to solid colors. Avoid bold or busy patterns that may divert attention. However, if you choose to incorporate patterns, opt for soft and small designs that complement rather than overpower the scene.

3. Footwear: No Worries! When it comes to footwear, simplicity is key. In newborn photography, your baby’s tiny toes are often the focus, and shoes detract from their adorable features. For adults, wear footwear that compliments the style of your outfit and make sure it’s in good shape; no old sneakers here please! Barefoot is always an option for the entire family as well.

4. Overpacking is Better than Underpacking: Preparing for a newborn session can be exciting and overwhelming at the same time. To ensure you have a variety of options, bring more outfits than you anticipate needing. This allows for flexibility and ensures that you have choices that complement different poses and backgrounds. If you’re uncertain about your selections, you can always consult with your photographer by sending pictures of the outfits in advance or discussing them during the session.

5. Coordination over Matching: Instead of attempting to match every detail, focus on coordinating the overall aesthetic. Coordinate outfits within your chosen color palette and consider varying the textures and styles to add visual interest. By coordinating outfits, you can create a visually appealing story within your photographs, highlighting the special connection between you and your newborn.

Dressing appropriately for a newborn photography session is an essential aspect of creating timeless and cherished memories. By following these thoughtful tips, you can ensure that the focus remains on your beautiful baby. Remember to select a coordinated color palette, opt for solid colors or subtle patterns, and avoid overly distracting footwear. Embrace the opportunity to bring more outfits and seek guidance from your photographer when needed. With these considerations in mind, you’re well on your way to capturing precious moments that you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
